About The TOYOTA PRIUS

The Toyota Prius original debuted as a concept car at the Tokyo Motor Show in 1995. The Toyota Prius became available to the consumers of Japan in 1997 as the world’s first mass-produced hybrid-electric vehicle. In 2001, the Toyota Prius was shipped to markets worldwide. The Toyota Prius is now available in over 70 countries and as of September 2010 has achieved over 2 million vehicle sales.

The first generation included the Toyota Prius NWH10, which became available in late 1997 to the Japanese market. It also included the Toyota Prius NHW11, the first Prius available to the United States. These models first appeared as a coupe design, until the second generation with the introduction of the mid-size liftback design that the Toyota Prius is known for today. To meet the needs of the average commuting consumer in the United States, the Toyota Prius NWH11 included a more compact, lighter, more powerful battery pack and the engine power was increased. By June 2000, so much interest for the Toyota Prius had been generated in the United States that Toyota created a registration website for those interested in purchasing the Toyota Prius upon its release.

The first generation continued until the release of the Toyota Prius XW20 in 2004. The body had undergone a total redesign and now appeared as a mid-size liftback. The design created more interior space, more storage space and was more aerodynamic than the previous design.

The Toyota Prius is now in its third generation, which commenced in 2009. This generation includes the Toyota Prius XW30 design. This model introduced a reduction in price in order to compete with other hybrids which had entered the market, including the Honda Insight. The newest model features a 1.8L, 98hp engine with an additional 36hp provided by the electric motor. The 2011 Toyota Prius is rated by the United States E.P.A. as achieving 50mpg.

Toyota has several new additions planned for the 2012 Toyota Prius line. These additions include a Toyota Prius Plug-in Hybrid. It will be available to only 15 states in the United States, which has been determined by the abundance of previous sales located within those states. An online website was established (similar to the one created for the first generation), for customers to register for purchase. An extended hatchback wagon, which will be known as the Toyota Prius v, will also be added to the Toyota Prius line. The Toyota Prius v wagon design includes a 50 percent increase in interior cargo room. The Totota Prius c concept will also be debuted in 2012. This model with provide consumers with a more compact and inexpensive alternative to the current Toyota Prius hatchback.
