After Henry Ford left the Henry Ford Company, a pair of his financial backers were persuaded to continue manufacturing cars using using a single cylinder engine developed by engineer Henry M. Leland. This was the beginning of the Cadillac Automobile Company. Their first cars, the 1902 Runabout and the Tonneau were 2-seat 10 hp cars almost identical to the 1903 Ford Model A. In 1909, Cadillac was acquired by General Motors and became their luxury brand as well as their commercial brand, used for ambulances, limousines and hearses. In the 20s and 30s, Cadillac would pioneer high powered engines such as V8s, V12s and even V16s for the upper class consumer market. The post WWII Cadillac would become the standard for American automobile style with its tailfins and extensive chrome. Luxury and size would continue to be the trademarks of Cadillac until the 1980s when they began downsizing models and introduced their first front-wheel-drive compact car, the Cimarron.
