About The VOLKSWAGEN JETTA

The Volkswagen Jetta debuted in 1979 at the Frankfurt Auto Show. It filled the sedan slot in the Volkswagen line, a step above the very popular Volkswagen Golf. In order to distinguish the Volkswagen Jetta from the Golf, it featured a three-box design with a roomier, more luxurious interior. The first generation of the Volkswagen Jetta, known as the Mark 1 series, was available in a two-door and four-door style. Three engine choices were available for the Volkswagen Jetta in various markets including a petrol four-cylinder engine, a carburetor engine, a fuel ejected engine, and two variations of a diesel engine.

The second generation of the Volkswagen Jetta, the Mark 2, was produced between 1983 and 1992. The Volkswagen Jetta Mark 2 featured a larger exterior and interior, offering an additional seat taking the seating total up to five. After its Mark 2 introduction, the Volkswagen Jetta quickly became the best-selling European vehicle in North America. Although the diesel engine was continuously offered in Canada, it was not available in the United States in 1988 through 1990.

In 1992 the Volkswagen Jetta was renamed the Volkswagen Vento in the European market, while it continued to be known as the Volkswagen Jetta in North America. In North America, the third generation was introduced as the Volkswagen Jetta 3 in 1993. This generation also reintroduced a diesel engine option for the Volkswagen Jetta to the North American market, the Turbocharged Direct Injections (TDI) diesel engine.

The fourth generation of the Volkswagen Jetta, referred to as the Volkswagen Bora in most markets except the North Americas where it was known as the Mk4, debuted in 1999. This model of the Volkswagen Jetta had more rounded edges, and introduced a wagon option (in 2001). The diesel engine technology was also improved upon to comply with increased emissions standards in North America and Europe.

The fifth generation of the Volkswagen Jetta, the Mark 5, was initially solely available in the United States in 2005 before being introduced to other markets. This version was similar to the previous Mark 4 model, which improvements to the engine and body composition. This generation of the Volkswagen Jetta also included the introduction of the Jetta SportWagen in 2007 and the Volkswagen Jetta TDI Cup Race series.

The Volkswagen Jetta is currently in its sixth generation of production, which commenced in 2010. The newer model of Volkswagen Jetta features lower quality of options intended to decrease costs to remain competitive, especially in the North American market, including lower cost body materials and leatherette interiors.

Over the years, The Volkswagen Jetta has introduced several environmental friendly cars starting with the Volkswagen Jetta CityStromer in the 1980’s. Volkswagen also introduced a second electric car to the Jetta line in 2001, the Bora Electric. Additionally, Volkswagen debuted two hydrogen cars, the Bora HyMotion and the Bora Hy.Power in 2002, as well as the Jetta MultiFuel in 1991.
