About The TOYOTA TACOMA

The Toyota Tacoma

The Toyota Tacoma was added to the Toyota line in 1995. It is considered a compact pickup truck. It was introduced to replace the Toyota Hilux, which was more commonly known simply as the Toyota Pickup. The Toyota Tacoma was designed and built exclusively for the North American market.

Today, the Toyota Tacoma comprises about 40 percent of sales within the compact and mid-size truck market within the United States. In fact, the Toyota Tacoma has been produced and provided for the U.S. Army Special Forces units in both Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom.

The first generation of the Toyota Tacoma offered either a 2.4L, 4-cylinder, 142 hp engine; a 2.7L, 4-cylindar, 150 hp engine or a 3.4L, V6, 190 hp engine. Two redesigns had occurred within the first generation of the Toyota Tacoma, one in 1998 and one in 2001. Each included minor cosmetic and mechanical changes to the Toyota Tacoma, including the addition of the Automatic Differential Disconnect (ADD) system and the additional option of a crew cab, four door model. The S-Runner trim package was also introduced in 2001 on the Toyota Tacoma.

The second generation introduced a larger, more powerful Toyota Tacoma; which was available in eighteen different designs varying in cab configurations, transmissions, engines and bed lengths. In addition to the standard cab, the Toyota Tacoma line now offered an access cab and a crew cab. The Toyota Tacoma customer could also choose from a four-speed or five-speed automatic transmission, or a five-speed or six-speed manual transmission. Toyota Tacoma drivers could choose from a five-foot short bed or a six-foot long bed. Lastly, the Toyota Tacoma’s 3.4L V6 engine was replaced with a 4.0L V6 engine, which increased the tow rating and payload capabilities. The Toyota Tacoma also released an X-Runner trim option between 2005 and 2008 in limited quantities, which featured several modifications to the frame, suspension and braking system.

A complete redesign is expected for the Toyota Tacoma for the upcoming model year. The changes include exterior upgrades, and the addition of a new Toyota Tacoma Convenience Extra Value Package for double cab models. The package will include cruise control, remote keyless entry and steering-wheel audio controls. This years Toyota Tacoma will also see the T | X and T | X Pro packages. The base T | X trim package for the Toyota Tacoma includes TRD 16-inch alloy bead-lock wheels and will allow for off-road capabilities. The T | X pro package includes a performance exhaust system.

The variation of the Toyota Tacoma line allows for almost any personalized configuration. The Toyota Tacoma allows the ability to convert from casual transportation vehicle to an off-road pickup with towing power. This factor, along with reputation of the Toyota line, has allowed continued success for the Toyota Tacoma.
