About The HONDA CIVIC

The Honda Civic has been offered by Honda Motor Company since 1972. Though originally designed as a two-door hatchback, the line has evolved to include coup and sedan designs. The Honda Civic is most known for its practicality and fuel economy, achieving over 40 mpg on the highway. The Honda Civic was designed in response to the increased pollution and rapid urbanization in Japan.

Over the years, changes in the Honda Civic have included wider wheel bases, increased horse power, and an increase in interior options. Originally, Honda Civic base models included very limited options. As the Honda Civic has become more competitive in the market, these options have grown to include air conditioning, power locks and windows, leather seats, satellite navigation and radio, and a six-speed manual transmission.

Honda introduced the CVCC (or Controlled Vortex Combustion Chamber) engine option for the Honda Civic in 1975, which allowed for cleaner, more efficient fuel combustion. This option was the only Honda Civic model available in the state of California, due to stricter emission standards. Over 100,000 Honda Civic’s sold that year.

The four door sedan Honda Civic model was added to the line in 1981. The Honda CRX, a two-seater design, was introduced to the line a couple years later in 1984. The Honda Civic CRX design was offered in two models, a 1.3-liter engine (allowing for up to 67 mpg on the highway) and a 1.5-liter engine. Further additions to the CRX line included the Si sportier version and the HF design for higher fuel economy in 1985. The CRX design was dropped from the Honda Civic line in 1991.

The Honda Civic model continues to evolve with the gas-electric hybrid model, added to the line in 2003. Mileage ratings for the Honda Civic hybrid originally averaged 46 mpg in the city and 51 mpg on the highway, which were not as efficient as some previous gas fueled Honda Civic models. In 2005, the Honda Civic GX natural gas model, was awarded the title of “Greenest Car” by the American Council for an Entergy Efficient Economy. That year, three out of the top ten models were Honda Civics.

Since its inception, the Honda Civic has been used for professional racing, especially in Japan and Europe, including the British Touring Car Championship and the European Touring Car Championship where the Honda Civic is very popular. The Honda Civic has also been very popular for street racing in the United States.

In December 2010, Honda Civic debuted its ninth generation. The vehicle has raked repeatedly as the top-selling car in both the United States and in Canada. The Honda Civic currently offers versatility in the line, between the Fit and the Accord. Various styles and designs are offered throughout the world depending on each markets demand. The Honda Civic is currently available in almost 160 nations worldwide.
