Honda Accord
The Honda Accord line has been offered by Honda Motor Company since 1976 and, according to Edmonds, the Accord is one of the most popular models offered by any manufacturer. It is sold throughout the world. Originally produced in Japan, the Honda Accord was the first Japanese car to have an American production plant. In addition to the US, the Honda Accord is, or has been, manufactured in four other countries. From 1982 through 1997, it has been the top selling Japanese car.
The predecessor to the Honda Accord was the Honda 1300. Throughout the model life, the Honda Accord has had various different styles. It was originally offered as a compact hatchback. Over the years it has changed into an intermediate sized vehicle. Recently it has been increased in size and level of luxury to a full size car.
The name, Honda Accord, was selected because the Japanese manufacturer wanted to show a balance between the automobile and people. There have been eight generations of the Honda Accord with several intermediary versions in between. The first generation in 1976 was a three door hatchback and was considered a moderate size compact car. The next generation of Honda Accord, introduced in 1982 was considered the most reliable cars available in the US. While the engine and drive train of this version of the Honda Accord was very similar to the first generation, much improvement had been made in quality control. In 1986 the third generation Honda Accord was introduced. Boasting better handling and stability, this version also included fixed halogen headlights.
In 1990, a fifth generation Honda Accord sported many improvements in its engineering. A larger engine, and electronic controls improved performance and reduced vibration and noise. In 1991 the SE was returned to the Honda Accord line up and in 1992 additional minor changes were made to the various Honda Accord trim levels. 1994 Honda Accord ushered in a larger chassis, while keeping its mid-sized status. Three trim levels were offered in the US at this time. The sixth generation, introduced in 1997, offered the Euro R, the Honda Accord SiR, and the Honda Accord wagon.
In 2002, Honda launched the seventh generation. There were two separate models: the Honda Accord Euro and the regular Honda Accord, sold in the North American markets. The most recent version of the Honda Accord is available as both a station wagon and as a sedan. Over the years, the Honda Accord has been successful in capturing the mood of the buying public, offering vehicles that meet the demand in size, power and level of luxury. Today the Honda Accord remains one of the most popular vehicles of all times.
