About The HONDA Company
Honda Motor Company was founded by Soichiro Honda. Honda has its roots in the small 2-cycle motorbike industry, with its first product being the Honda Cub, which utilized a small 2-cycle engine. In 1963 the first automobile, the T360 went on sale. It was a mini pickup truck. By 1964 Honda Motor Company had grown to be the largest manufacturer of motorcycles in the world.
Today the company offers over 30 different models. These range from the compact Civic line to its light duty truck, the Ridgeline. The Ridgeline and the Civic won the coveted Motor Trend Car and Truck of the Year award. Internationally Honda offers the Accord, CR-V, Civic, Fit, Insight and Odyssey. While the models offered vary by location, the overall trend has been to offer vehicles which are appropriate to different needs internationally. Its compact line, the Civic, is the second oldest Japanese manufactured vehicle behind only the Toyota Corolla. The Honda Acura takes honors as the first Japanese luxury vehicle.
There are Honda assembly plants in 14 countries around the world. Over 80 percent of the Honda and Acura vehicles sold in the US are built in North American assembly plants, with Torrance California being the headquarters of American Honda Motor Company. Since its inception over 50 years ago, Honda Motor Company has been led by only 7 leaders, with its founder Soichiro Honda at the helm until 1973.
In addition to motorcycles and vehicles, Honda also manufactures power equipment, engines, solar cells, and mountain bikes. Honda’s wide range of power equipment includes: lawn mowers, tillers, trimmers, snow blowers, outboard engines, scooters, generators and water pumps. Additionally, Honda has been pioneering research on robots and aircraft.
Honda also offers several alternative fuel models including the Honda Civic GX, a natural gas vehicle and the Honda Insight, the first hybrid electric car sold in the US. These have been followed by the Honda Civic Hybrid, the Honda Civic Hybrid and the Honda CR-Z. Honda also offers the FCX Clarity, powered by hydrogen fuel cell technology. Due to the lack of hydrogen filling stations, the demand for this vehicle is currently limited.
Honda has been very active over the years in both motorcycle and automobile racing, due in large part to the initial interest of the founder. Their participation includes Formula One, Superbike and Motorcycle Grand Prix. In 1982 Honda formed a racing division. Honda uses information from its racing division to help guide its production research and development efforts. Since its racing beginnings 1959, Honda has won many races and championships. Based on its foundations of offering a wide range of vehicles to meet the demands of an ever changing market, Honda has been successful in retaining and growing market share on the international stage.
