BMW was formed under name Bavarian Flugzeug Werke.
In 1917 the company adopted the BMW name and stylized blue and white propeller segments. These are the colors of the Bavarian coat of arms.
The BMW IV six cylinder engine achieved a world record altitude of 32,000 ft. in 1919.
In 1923 the first BMW motorcycle, the R32 twin, was introduced.
In 1928 BMW started to manufacture cars. Their first car was the Austin Seven.
Ernst Henne achieved a world motorcycle speed record of 134 mph on a BMW R37 in 1929.
BMW built the 502 V8. This was Germany's first post-war V8 in 1954.
In 1962 BMW launched the BMW 1500, it was intended to position BMW as a maker of high quality, sport compact saloons.
In 1973 BMW won the European Touring Car Championship and European Championship which was for F2 cars.
The BMW E1 electric concept car was created in 1991.
In 1992 BMW began construction of a plant in Spartanburg, South Carolina.
BMW acquired Rover from Bae in 1994.
In 2000 Rover was sold to Phoenix and Land Rover was sold to Ford.
BMW launched the MINI in 2001.
In 2003 BMW assumed marque responsibility for Rolls-Royce Motor cars.
In 2004 the MINI Convertible launched and BMW M5 was launched.
